Driving Safety Tips for Traveling on a Summer Road Trip

By May 31, 2019November 27th, 2019No Comments

Summer is right around the corner, and so is that road trip you’ve been planning with your friends since January. Whether your objective is to stop at every national park and landmark on the way, or if you’re just seeing where the road takes you, safety should be your ultimate goal. A little preparation (even on a spontaneous drive) and safe driving will ensure your trip is memorable — for the right reasons.

Address any Maintenance Needs

Before leaving on your trip, make sure your tires are full of air, you have enough oil, and any other maintenance issues are taken care of. If your car needs any repairs, don’t assume it will make it through the trip. Anything that needs fixed should be checked by a mechanic beforehand.

Keep Your Car Stocked with Supplies

On a long road trip, it is best to be prepared for anything. You may, whether intentional or unplanned, end up on one of the country’s many scenic routes. There are plenty of areas in the United States where roads stretch for hundreds of miles, uninterrupted by any stores or gas stations.

You should keep the following supplies in your car, just in case:

  • Food
  • Water
  • First aid kit
  • Blankets
  • Portable phone charger
  • Atlas
  • Tool box

Anything else you think you may need, you should bring. As the old cliché goes, it’s better to be safe than sorry!

Drive Sober

Never use alcohol or drugs while driving! Especially on a long road trip, you need to remain as alert as possible. Driving under the influence only endangers yourself, your passengers, and others on the road.

Follow All Traffic Laws

On a road trip, you’ll encounter a variety of types of roads, from the country’s busiest highways to empty treks through the desert. On those empty roads specifically, remain conscious of your driving — it can be tempting to drive fast or recklessly when there is nobody else around you, but that is no excuse. No matter where you are driving, do it safely!
